Lesser known safari creatures – 2
The Bat-eared Fox is easy to recognize with its very large ears. The distribution is almost the same than the Aardwolf with a Eastern and a Southern african population, separated by a large stretch of miombo forest where it does not occur. This is simply due to the fact that Bat-eared foxes and Aardwolfs have the same diet, mainly Harvester Termites (both have exactly the same distribution than these termites) but the bat-eared Fox eats also other insects, so this little guy is a bit more active during the day than the mainly nocturnal Aardwolf with its strict diet.
I have seen Bat-eared foxes many times in Eastern Africa but they were always shy and difficult to approach; due to the heavy rain the night before which flooded the dens, that day we found 3 dens with the whole family lying outside in the sunshine and one family crossing the Savannah in early morning sunshine: the photo shows an older puppy and in the bg and adult with even larger ears.
Hope you like it
Tom
