FIRST TIME ON TN

Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Nymphalidae
Tribe: Heliconiini
Genus: Dryas
Hübner, [1807]
Species: D. iulia

Dryas iulia (often incorrectly spelled julia), commonly called the Julia Butterfly, Julia Heliconian, The Flame, or Flambeau, is a species of brush-footed butterfly. The sole representative of its genus Dryas, it is native from Brazil to southern Texas and Florida, and in summer can sometimes be found as far north as eastern Nebraska. Over 15 subspecies have been described.
Its wingspan ranges from 82 to 92 mm, and it is colored orange (brighter in male specimens) with black markings; this species is somewhat unpalatable to birds and belongs to the "orange" Batesian mimic complex.
This butterfly is a fast flier and frequents clearings, paths, and margins of forests and woodlands. It feeds on the nectar of flowers, such as lantanas (Lantana) and Shepherd's-needle (Scandix pecten-veneris), and the tears of caiman, the eye of which the butterfly irritates to produce tears. Its caterpillars feeds on leaves of passion vines including Passiflora affinis and Yellow Passionflower (P. lutea) in Texas.
The species is popular in butterfly houses because it is long-lived and active throughout the day.
The subspecie nudeola(M.Bates,1934) live only in Cuba.

Hello Luciano,
Congratulations on another TN first!
A fine capture of this Heliconiid butterfly resting with its wings open. Excwellent sharpness, natural colours and contrast with the leafy BG.
There are several similar looking in this genus and I have photographed one years ago in Trindad, called a 'Flambeau'.
Thanks and best regards,
Ciao,
Ivan

the colors are impressive, beautiful composition and photo from a fine POV!
regards Luciano

what a marvellous capture. The color is so pretty on the green surroundings.
Exciting brightness and the sharpness is simply superb.
Excellent job.

Ciao Luciano. Te la sei portata dietro dalo tuo ospizio personale? Ottimo dettaglio e fenomenale contrasto tra l'aramcione e lo sfondo.

Roberto

Hello Luciano,

Hope you are doing fine friend. You know one thing, besides many others, I like about you, are your candid comments, for you call a spade a spade....smile.......salute to you. Yes, if you do not mind, your name often reminds me of one very famous gangster from New York who was actually born in Sicily, named Mr. Charlie 'Lucky' Luciano.......hehehe.....yes, if your name is pronounced as "loo-tch-a-noh".

Now serious things but before that I hope you did not mind the gangster name reference, take it as a light joke.

One more good thing about you is the fact that after Silvio you are the butterfly man for me, hailing from the same region. I am really all praise for your efforts in this field.

This specimen looks quite bedraggled as its wings show that it is an old, worn out butterfly but its colours are exquisite and the light and focus are fine. Thanks a lot for sharing another wonderful photo and thanks for your support and comments to my photos, I feel honoured.....take care.....warmest regards/Abid

Ciao Luciano,

Ciao Luciano!
Grazie per offrirci un'altra novità, anche se, devo dire, preferisco le farfalle tutte colorate.
Questa poverina mi fa anche pena. Meno male che le hai reso giustizia con un perfetto primo piano. Totale messa a fuoco e ottima nitidezza. Bellissimo il contrasto con lo sfondo verde.
Complimenti e grazie.
Ciao e buona serata! Vanda

Hola Luciano,
Otro bella "cubanita", bonito viaje!
TFS, Salut

Bonsoir Luciano,

Pierre

Ciao Luciano,
