The Tawny Coster (Acraea terpsicore) is a small leathery winged butterfly which is common in grassland and scrub habitats. It belongs to the Nymphalidae or brush-footed butterfly family. It has a weak fluttery flight. It is avoided by most insect predators. This species and the Yellow Coster Acraea vesta are the only two Indian representatives of the predominantly African sub-family Acraeinae.

Wingspan 45-55mm. A medium sized reddish brown butterfly with rounded wing apices and rather long wings. The male is brightly coloured, while the female, even a freshly emerged specimen, is quite dull. The wings of both sexes are somewhat transparent, though it is more so in the female. The upperside is studded with black spots and small markings. The marginal band of the hind wing on the upper sides is black and has small white spots. The corresponding band on the underside is much wider, but is almost entirely occupied by large white spots.

The butterfly is found in India and Sri Lanka. It is common all the year round and is equally at home in forest clearings and open country. Though mainly seen at low elevations it has been recorded at heights of up to 7000 feet in south India and sometimes in the North. This is a butterfly of the hills as well as the plains. It is plentiful in the pre-monsoon and monsoon period and becomes scarce later on.

The butterfly exudes an oily and smelly yellow liquid when handled and is unpalatable to birds and most insects. They are well protected and have a slow and weak flight, frequently visiting flowers and are easily netted. There are no mimics in India. The butterfly breeds on plants of the family Loganiaceae and species of Passiflora many of which contain toxins that are sequestered by the caterpillars.

It was a cloudy day and the conditions were not great for photography but the sight of this beautiful butterfly forced me to take out my camera. I have to admit that I don't have the priviledge of using higher end equipment and the handicap is evident here but I still posted this as it is the only open-winged Tawny Coster I have. Still hoping to find a better one someday in perfect conditions.

Hi Sumon,
You have a trade mark style that is easily recognisable, even from the thumbnail image. I think this is a fine image personally, the composition and spot on DOF easily make up for the fact that there was poor light - it shows you can still produce great shots even in less than perfect condition.

Buena composición y conjunto. Aunque falta un poco de definición la toma es excelente. Saludos.

Add one more chapter to your ongoing saga in the world of the small creatures. Same as said before goes on for this Sumon. I always learn more about life in general through your dedication.

Bob

Hi Sumon Da,
A nice capture of this butterfly with wings opened. As per my experience they don't open their wings often. The composition is world class as always. Thanks a lot for sharing.

That's interesting about the liquid the butterfly emits - like a garter snake.
These are gorgeous colors -rich and full.
Great composition - I like the way it's balanced on the flower.

bonjour sumon
une autres tres belle et bonne photo de papillon,le POV est bien et les couleurs naturelles.

How exquisite! The butterfly is gorgeous, in a wonderful pose, sharp details, magnificent colors, has beautiful patterns. Add the flowers, the leaves, the background and the composition and it is picture perfect.

Hello Sumon,
Splendid capture of this beauty which I don't think you need to bwe ashamed of!! Pretty sharp and lovely colours and I like its pose.
Looking at the flower and the leaves I wonder if you turned this to be vertical? It may have looked even better horizontal but that's a matter of taste. Well done!
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hello Sumon,
Fine capture of this Acraeid on the brush-like white flower. Technically of high standard and the pleasing neutral BG and composition make this an excellent image.
Acraeids are an interesting group of butterflies. In Africa I have seen butterflies that mimic them (Batesian mimicry).
TFS this one and best wishes, Ivan

Excellent shot of this very well preserved specimen of Tawny Coster, Sumon.
Brilliant composition and very attractive colours. The blossom laden perch presents a wonderful colour contrast with the subject.
Thanks for sharing this fantastic image.
Regards.

The butterfly has a very natural look in this fine image! Soft-crisp texture in the wings, patterns well reproduced and fine natural colours...
The composition is atgtractive, with just as much background as we need!
