Better known backyard inhabitants:

The title "Rocket 88" alludes to an Oldsmobile car of the 1950'ies of which I was a proud owner for one day. The car had a mighty V-8 engine and used to unexpectedly go off like a rocket. That is what the Rose chafers did each time I tried to shoot them in flight. The Rose chafer (Coleoptera; Scarabaeidae; Cetonia aurata; Gemeiner Rosenkäfer) has a flight apparatus not like other beetles: it does not extend the elytrae before unfolding the hind wings, the elytrae are fused together and can only be slightly lifted. The hind wings snap out and the folding hinges klick into place really fast, allowing a surprise start. I don't know the flight speed, it could be 30 km/h. To land, they need to slow down, for this they raise the elytrae like jets raise the breaks. They then literally drop down on their target.

Technical stuff: hand held and hand focussed Macro lens, twin flash with light dispersers, 1/125 sec, f16, 100 ISO. The beetle was placed to the leaf by hand, the shutter released 2 sec later, a 1 sec sequence of pictures added (for the flash to reload).

I hope you enjoy!

Hello Dietrich,
An amazing macro and good note with it!
You have captured this C. aurata with superb sharpness, but seen taking off from a great POV with excellent timimg to show us the extended wings with the slightly raised elytrae. With this you have not only delighted the eye but included a little education.
Thank you very much my friend,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Dietrich,

A very interesting note and image, thanks for sharing that.

John

Hallo Dieter!

:-)

Markus
